Ask AI to question you before it answers

TL;DR
Add one line to your prompt: ask the AI to pose up to five questions first. You get a better answer because missing context is cleared upfront.

Ask AI to question you before it answers

The line that improves the answer

Add this to the end of your prompt: "Ask me up to 5 clarifying questions before you answer." It is useful when you need a text, a decision, a plan, or wording where tone and context matter.

You do not have to front-load every detail. Start with your goal, audience, and desired outcome. The AI can then collect the missing information before drafting an answer based on assumptions.

How to use it

  1. Briefly describe what you want to achieve.
  2. Add: "Ask me up to 5 clarifying questions before you answer."
  3. Answer only the questions that actually matter.
  4. Then ask for the final output.

Example: "I need a short email to a customer about a delay. Tone: friendly and accountable. Ask me up to 5 clarifying questions before you answer."

Why it helps

Many weak AI answers come from missing context, not from a weak model. Clarifying questions define the goal, tone, length, constraints, and audience before the actual answer is written.

That reduces rework. Instead of fixing three vague drafts, you answer a few focused questions first and usually get a much better first version.

When to skip it

For simple tasks like "shorten this sentence" or "translate this paragraph", the extra step is usually overkill. Use it for open-ended work: strategy, writing, planning, analysis, customer communication, and anything where nuance matters.
