Delete an Old App When You Install a New One

How to Do It

Turn every new app installation into a tiny cleanup step. After you install a new app, open your app list and look for one app you have not used in weeks. Delete it completely, or remove it from the home screen if you rarely need it but still want to keep it available.

Keep the rule lightweight. This should take about a minute, not become a full digital decluttering project. If you are unsure, ask yourself three questions: Have I opened this app in the last 30 days? Do I already have another app that does the same job better? Does this app contain data I need to export first?

Why It Works

Phones do not usually become messy in one dramatic moment. They fill up slowly: a test app here, an event app there, a tool you needed once and forgot. A one-in-one-out rule stops that automatic growth without forcing you to schedule a big cleanup session.

The benefit is practical: fewer icons, fewer notification sources, less searching, and less visual noise. You make an active decision about what deserves space on your device. That may not magically speed up your phone, but it does make the phone easier to use.

Do Not Delete Blindly

Do not remove apps that hold important data, logins, tickets, or security functions without checking first. Be especially careful with banking apps, authenticator apps, public transport tickets, health records, travel documents, and apps that store local files.

If an app is rarely used but important, move it into a folder or remove it from the home screen instead. For test apps, old games, duplicate scanners, unused shopping apps, and expired event apps, deleting is usually the cleaner choice.

Add a Monthly Check

Once a month, open your phone's storage overview and sort apps by size or usage if your system offers that view. Look for apps that take up a lot of space but no longer serve a real purpose. This catches the apps you missed during your quick one-in-one-out moments.
