Put a Damp Towel Under Your Cutting Board

TL;DR
Anchor your cutting board with a slightly damp towel before you start. It slips less, so chopping feels steadier and safer.

Put a Damp Towel Under Your Cutting Board

Ingredients

You only need a cutting board, a paper towel or kitchen towel, a little water, and a stable counter. The towel should be damp, not dripping wet.

How to do it

Wet the towel lightly, wring it out, and lay it flat on the counter. Place the cutting board on top and press it down once. Before picking up the knife, push the board with your hand: if it still moves, flatten the towel again or use a larger one.

Why it helps

A dry board can slide on smooth counters, especially when you chop onions, herbs, or firm vegetables. The damp towel adds grip between the board and the surface. You do not need to hold the board with your free hand, so your cuts stay calmer and more controlled.

Good to know

For heavy boards, very slick stone counters, or forceful chopping, a proper non-slip mat is even better. Do not leave a wet towel trapped under a wooden board for long: remove it, dry the counter, and clean the board after use.
