Undo an edit
- Open an editable text field, such as a note or a message draft, and make a small change to try the gesture.
- Place three fingers on the screen and swipe left together. This undoes the most recent text edit.
- If an Undo control appears at the top instead, tap it to complete the action.
- Changed your mind? Swipe right with three fingers to redo the edit, or tap Redo if that control appears.
When it helps
The gesture is useful after you accidentally delete a sentence, paste over a selection, or type something you do not want to keep. Try it immediately while the same text field is active. You do not need to retype the missing words just to reverse the last edit. Apple documents the left and right three-finger swipes specifically for editing text on iPhone.
What to expect
Undo reverses the most recent edit, not every earlier change at once. If you need to go further back, repeat the gesture and check the text after each step. Redo restores an edit you just undid. Gesture support and the exact controls can vary by app or editing context, so test it in an editable field first. This is a text-editing shortcut, not a promise that you can recover deleted notes, sent messages, or changes already saved elsewhere.
