Do married people live longer? Read the numbers right

What the numbers actually say

Married people live longer on average, but that does not establish that getting married will extend your life. Swiss Federal Statistical Office life tables for 2018/2023 give married men aged 65 another 20.8 years of life expectancy, versus 16.4 for never-married men. For women, the figures are 24.1 versus 20.4 years. These are remaining years from age 65, not total lifespan. “Never married” is not the same as “living alone”.

Why a marriage certificate is not the explanation

The groups differ in more than marital status. Health, income and lifestyle can be linked both to marriage and to life expectancy: these are possible selection effects. The Swiss social insurance office analysis also discusses emotional support, less risky behaviour and preventive healthcare as possible explanations. The statistics do not separate those influences into a personal marriage bonus.

Check the next headline in three steps

  1. Identify the population: these figures concern people aged 65 in Switzerland, not every age group worldwide.
  2. Separate association from cause: “Married people live longer” does not prove “Getting married gives you four extra years”.
  3. Take a practical idea from the discussion: arrange a regular walk with someone you trust, or agree to support each other with important appointments.

What you should not conclude

You can build reliable social connections regardless of marital status. A shared walk is an everyday suggestion, not a proven way to gain extra years based on these figures. Relationship quality matters too; marriage is not automatically protective. Group averages cannot predict how long you personally will live.
