Spot an Evening or Morning Crescent Moon

Read the time and direction

When you spot a thin crescent, start with the time and where it sits in the sky—not a supposedly universal left-or-right rule. As a broad guide in mid-latitudes, a waxing crescent is typically visible in the west after sunset. A waning crescent is more likely to appear in the east before sunrise.

Try this quick check:

  1. Note whether it is shortly after sunset or before sunrise.
  2. Look for the Moon low in the western sky in the evening, or the eastern sky in the morning.
  3. If you are unsure, compare your observation with a current lunar-phase calendar.

Why timing gives you a clue

Across its phases, the Moon rises on average later each day. A waxing crescent follows the Sun and remains above the horizon after sunset. A waning crescent rises before the Sun, so it is often visible in the morning twilight. This comes from the changing positions of the Sun, Earth, and Moon; the illuminated half of the Moon always faces the Sun.

What the shape cannot tell you

The direction the crescent tips point is not a dependable worldwide shortcut for deciding whether the Moon is waxing or waning. Your latitude, the season, and the Moon’s path all affect its orientation. Buildings, hills, and haze can also hide it. Treat the evening-or-morning pattern as a rough guide for mid-latitudes, not a replacement for a local ephemeris.

Make your own comparison

When the crescent is visible, record the time and direction on two evenings or mornings. That simple comparison makes the difference between an evening Moon and a morning Moon easier to remember. NASA’s phase guide can help identify the phase; actual visibility still depends on your location and horizon.
