Reviewed 27 September 2026. This is general information for the Dutch market, not personal insurance advice.
Back to the core idea: the network carries the risk\n\nThe principle is simple: self-employed people share the risk when one participant cannot work. At SharePeople, donations go directly from healthy participants to someone who is temporarily unable to work. For long-term disability, that community safety net can be complemented by a collectively purchased Basic AOV. You choose from three structures:
- SharePeople 2 years: peer donations cover the first two years of illness.
- Basic AOV: a collectively purchased insurance policy with a two-year waiting period and payouts up to Dutch state-pension age.
- SharePeople Complete: combines donations for an earlier start or extra income with the Basic AOV for long-term disability.
Count the full cost
SharePeople currently lists a one-off β¬75 registration fee and a β¬15 monthly participation fee, both excluding VAT. With SharePeople 2 years, you also make roughly one donation per month on average. The Basic AOV adds an insurance premium that depends on income, age and occupation. Use the personal calculator and compare the total cost rather than the advertised starting price.
Check whether you qualify
You must qualify as an entrepreneur for Dutch tax purposes, be registered with the Chamber of Commerce, be fully able to work and have a Dutch bank account. The current entry age for Basic AOV is 60, or 57 for heavy occupations. The provider says SharePeople 2 years remains available up to state-pension age.
Compare before you choose
Put these points next to a traditional AOV, a mutual-support fund and your own emergency savings:
- waiting period and payout duration;
- insured or donated monthly income;
- exclusions, medical acceptance and occupational class;
- total net cost and tax treatment;
- what happens when terms or legislation change.
Ask an independent insurance adviser if the trade-offs are unclear. Product terms and the planned Dutch mandatory disability scheme can change, so always check current provider and government information.
