Rinse Blood, Egg and Milk Stains With Cold Water First

TL;DR
Start protein-rich stains with cold water. Heat can set blood, egg or milk deeper into fabric and make the stain harder to remove.

Rinse Blood, Egg and Milk Stains With Cold Water First

What to do first

Hold the stained area under cold running water as soon as you can, ideally from the back of the fabric. That helps push blood, egg, milk or other protein-rich residue out of the fibers instead of driving it further in.

After rinsing, blot gently with a clean cloth. If a mark remains, use a mild detergent or a fabric-safe stain remover and give it a little time to work. Wash the item normally only after the stain has visibly loosened.

Why cold water helps

Proteins react badly to heat. Hot water can change their structure and make them cling more firmly to fabric, a bit like egg white turning solid when heated. That is why starting with hot water is often the wrong move for blood, egg and milk stains.

Cold water will not magically remove every stain, but it reduces the chance that you set it before the real wash has a chance to work. Fresh stains usually respond best, so acting quickly matters.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not scrub aggressively, especially on wool, silk or delicate textiles. Scrubbing can roughen fibers and spread the stain. Avoid the dryer and the iron while any mark is still visible, because heat can make the problem more permanent.

Check the care label before treating delicate garments. Cold water for blood stains is well supported by textile-care guidance; for egg and milk, the same advice is based on their protein content, with fabric type and stain age still playing a role.

A simple order

Rinse cold, blot gently, pretreat mildly, then wash. Check the item again before drying it. If you still see the stain, repeat the cold rinse and pretreatment instead of locking it in with heat.
