Set up 2FA backups before you need them

How to set it up

  1. Open the security settings for your most important accounts. Start with email, password manager, Apple ID, Google account, banking and work logins.
  2. Generate recovery codes or backup codes and store them immediately in a safe place.
  3. If the service allows it, add a second trusted device or a second authenticator.
  4. Check once that you can find the codes again without leaving them exposed in daily use.

Why it helps

Two-factor authentication protects your accounts well, but it can also lock you out. If your phone breaks, gets lost or is replaced, the missing second factor can become the real problem. A prepared backup turns that emergency into a manageable recovery step.

Where to keep the codes

Good places are a trusted password manager, an encrypted vault or a printed sheet stored with important documents. Bad places are screenshots, plain notes, emails to yourself or photos in your camera roll.

Good to know

You do not need to start with every account. Prioritize the accounts that protect your digital identity. If a service only offers SMS as a fallback, it is better than nothing, but authenticator apps, passkeys and backup codes are usually stronger.
